Taste Mexico's Authentic Soul: Howard Smith Wharves Hosts Legendary El Vilsito for 'La Mexicana' Fiesta
The banks of the Brisbane River have been transformed into a sensory explosion of colour, music, and the authentic, smoky aroma of Mexico’s finest street food. Howard Smith Wharves is hosting 'La Mexicana,' a four-day cultural festival that isn't just serving tacos—it's flying in a slice of Mexico City’s legendary street culinary scene.
In a massive coup for Brisbane food lovers, the main lawn is now the temporary home of two master chefs from Taquería El Vilsito. If that name sounds familiar, it's because it is a global icon. Based in Mexico City, El Vilsito is famous not just for its incredible, Michelin Guide-recommended Tacos al Pastor, but for operating out of an active automotive mechanic's workshop. When the sun goes down, the tire racks are moved, the charcoal is lit, and the tacos take center stage.
They have brought this authentic grit and flavor to Brisbane, bringing the spirit of the chilango (Mexico City resident) to our doorstep.
The Michelin-Caliber Star: El Vilsito Tacos
The centerpiece of the entire La Mexicana festival is the massive trompo—the vertical rotating spit of marinated pork, capped with a whole pineapple.
Watching the El Vilsito chefs work is theatre in itself. A swift slice of the knife releases the tender pork; a second flick sends a piece of pineapple flying from the top to land perfectly on the taco below.
But the menu goes deeper than just their famous Tacos al Pastor:
Food Menu Highlights
Tacos al Pastor: The star attraction. Marinated pork cooked on a vertical spit, thinly sliced into warm corn tortillas and served with pineapple, onion, and cilantro.
Volcán al Pastor: A crispy, toasted tortilla topped with melted cheese and the signature al pastor pork, creating a "volcano" of flavor.
Loaded Alambre: A hearty mix of grilled meats (usually al pastor or beef), melted cheese, peppers, and onions, served with tortillas.
Fresh Tostadas de Pescado: Crispy tortillas topped with fresh seafood (typically white fish or kingfish) and bright citrus notes.
Guacamole & Totopos: Freshly made guacamole served with thick, crunchy corn chips for sharing.
Churros with Cajeta: Traditional fried dough dusted in cinnamon sugar and served with a rich goat’s milk caramel sauce (cajeta).
Drink Menu: Margarita Week Specials
As the festival runs alongside Margarita Week, the drinks are heavily focused on Patrón Tequila with creative variations found at the Patrón Garden and various HSW venues:
Signature Margaritas: Classic Tommy’s Margaritas, plus sweet, smoky, and spicy interpretations.
Fruit Variations: Flavors such as Watermelon, Frozen Mango, and Blood Orange.
Unique Twists: Keep an eye out for more adventurous options like the "Tom Yum Margarita" or the "Chinese Gooseberry Margarita."
Felons Paloma Sour Ale: A limited-release beer from Felons Brewing Co. brewed with tequila, salt, and grapefruit zest.
Mexican Beers: Buckets of Corona, Tecate, and Pacifico are widely available across the lawn.
A Full Riverside Fiesta
While the food is undeniably the main attraction, La Mexicana is a complete sensory immersion.
Howard Smith Wharves' Main Lawn has been transformed with vibrant, immersive Mexican styling. Think Papel Picado (perforated paper) banners, a huge, floral Patrón Margarita Garden, and dedicated festival zones designed for lingering by the river.
The energy is electric, with live music and rotating DJs providing a soundtrack that ranges from traditional sounds to modern beats, designed to turn the waterfront into an open-air fiesta well into the night.
A Festival of Margaritas
Conveniently running alongside Margarita Week, the beverage menu at La Mexicana is extensive. Whether you prefer your margaritas classic, spicy, frozen, or artisanal, the Patrón-sponsored bars and surrounding HSW venues have you covered.
